McAfee not updating or showing "not protected"? Steps to try

When McAfee shows "not protected" or will not update, the cause is usually an expired subscription, real-time scanning turned off, or a damaged installation.

Quick answer

Restart, confirm your subscription, then right-click the McAfee icon and choose Check for updates. Make sure Real-time scanning is on. If it still fails, uninstall McAfee, run the official McAfee Consumer Product Removal (MCPR) tool, and reinstall from your McAfee account.

These are general self-help steps. McAfee updates its app regularly, so menu names on your PC may differ slightly from the ones described here.

  1. Restart the PC

A restart finishes half-installed McAfee and Windows updates. Choose Start, then the power button, then Restart.

  2. Check your subscription

An expired subscription is the most common reason for a "not protected" message. Open the McAfee app and look for your subscription status, or sign in to your account by typing McAfee's web address yourself.

McAfee is often preinstalled on new PCs as a time-limited trial. When the trial ends, protection stops updating unless you subscribe or switch to another product.

  3. Check for updates

Right-click the McAfee icon in the notification area at the bottom right of the screen (select the small arrow if you cannot see it) and choose Check for updates. You can also check from inside the McAfee app. Restart when the update finishes.

  4. Turn real-time scanning back on

Open the McAfee app and find Real-time scanning, usually in the protection or PC security settings. If it is off, turn it on. If it switches itself off again, continue with the steps below, and consider running a Microsoft Defender Offline scan, as some malware disables antivirus software.

  5. Remove any second antivirus

Running McAfee alongside Norton or another full antivirus causes conflicts. Open Settings, then Apps, then Installed apps, and uninstall the one you do not want. Microsoft Defender steps aside automatically.

  6. Fix the date and time, then update Windows

Turn on Set time automatically under Settings, then Time & language, then Date & time. Then install all pending updates from Windows Update and restart.

  7. Reinstall McAfee cleanly

    1. Uninstall McAfee from Settings, then Apps, then Installed apps, and restart.
    2. Go to mcafee.com/support, typing it yourself, and search for the McAfee Consumer Product Removal tool (MCPR). Download it only from McAfee's site and run it to clear leftover files. Restart again.
    3. Sign in to your account on McAfee's official website and download a fresh copy from there.

Our uninstall guide covers this in more detail.

  8. If it still fails, use McAfee's official support

For account, billing or activation problems, start from mcafee.com/support and choose a contact option there. Do not use phone numbers from search ads, pop-ups or emails.
