Quick answer

Guardio is a browser add-on that runs alongside Microsoft Defender. Emsisoft, G DATA and Heimdal are full security products that take over from Defender's real-time scanning. For many careful home users, the free Defender plus regular updates is enough.

Most antivirus comparisons cover the same few big names. Some smaller security companies take a genuinely different approach, and they are worth understanding. This guide covers four of them: Guardio, Emsisoft, G DATA and Heimdal.

How we wrote this. No company paid for this comparison, and there are no affiliate links on this page. Features, plans and prices change, so confirm the details on each company's official website before you buy.

Do you need extra antivirus at all?

Windows 11 includes Microsoft Defender Antivirus at no extra cost, and it is on by default. It provides real-time protection, ransomware protection through Controlled folder access, a firewall, and SmartScreen warnings for dangerous downloads and websites. For many careful home users, Defender plus regular updates is enough.

Another product may be worth a look if:

  • someone in your household often clicks links in emails, texts or ads
  • you want stronger protection against phishing and scam sites inside the browser
  • you would like extras such as banking protection, automatic app updates or managing several family PCs in one place
  • you want a second opinion from a different detection engine

Do not run two full antivirus programs at once. Two real-time scanners can conflict and slow your PC down. Browser-focused tools such as Guardio are different, because they are designed to run alongside Defender.

Guardio

What it is. A browser-based security service. On a computer it runs as an extension for browsers such as Chrome and Edge, and there are mobile apps too.

What it does. It checks websites before they load and can block known phishing pages, scam sites and malicious downloads. It can also deal with unwanted browser notifications and flag risky extensions. Some plans add identity features such as data-breach alerts.

Strengths

  • Quick to set up
  • Targets common browser threats such as scams and phishing
  • Designed to run alongside Microsoft Defender
  • Family plans can cover several people

Limitations

  • Not a full antivirus, so it does not replace file-level protection
  • Protection is limited to supported browsers
  • Full features need a paid subscription
  • The browser permissions it needs may concern some people

May suit: households where the main worry is someone clicking a suspicious link or landing on a scam page. It works as an extra layer on top of Defender.

Emsisoft Anti-Malware

What it is. Emsisoft is a New Zealand security company known for its malware and ransomware research. Its main consumer product, Emsisoft Anti-Malware, is a full antivirus for Windows.

What it does. It combines Emsisoft's own detection with a licensed Bitdefender engine, plus behaviour blocking that watches for suspicious activity such as files suddenly being encrypted. It also includes web protection against known malicious sites.

Strengths

  • Strong focus on ransomware and behaviour-based detection
  • Clean interface with few extras
  • Designed to keep system overhead low
  • Online management can help with several PCs

Limitations

  • The main consumer product is Windows-only
  • No bundled VPN or password manager
  • Behaviour blocking can occasionally flag unusual but legitimate programs
  • Paid product, with trial terms that vary

May suit: people who want a straightforward antivirus focused on malware and ransomware, rather than a large bundle of extra tools.

G DATA

What it is. G DATA CyberDefense is a German security company founded in 1985. It offers several Windows packages, from basic antivirus up to broader security suites.

What it does. Its detection combines several approaches, including signatures and behaviour monitoring. A feature called BankGuard is designed to protect online banking and shopping. Higher-tier packages can add a firewall, backup, password management and device controls.

Strengths

  • Long history in the security industry
  • Banking-focused protection in supported packages
  • Several package levels to choose from
  • Covered by European data-protection law

Limitations

  • Larger suites can use more resources than lighter products
  • You may pay for features you will not use
  • More settings can make it feel busier
  • Paid product, with trial terms that vary

May suit: people who bank or shop online often and want a broad suite rather than a minimal antivirus.

Heimdal

What it is. Heimdal is a Danish cybersecurity company with business and home products. Its approach puts prevention alongside detection.

What it does. Heimdal is known for network-level web filtering, which can block connections to known malicious or phishing domains before an app reaches them. It can also update supported third-party apps automatically. Some home plans add antivirus scanning.

Strengths

  • Web filtering can cover more than one browser
  • Automatic app updates help close security holes in outdated software
  • Prevention features can stop threats earlier

Limitations

  • Fewer consumer reviews than larger brands
  • Network filtering can occasionally clash with VPNs or some websites
  • Features vary between plans
  • Full features are paid

May suit: people who often forget to update their apps, or who want web protection that goes beyond one browser.

How to choose

No single product suits everyone. It depends on what you want to protect and which features you will actually use.

  • Mainly worried about scams and phishing: a browser layer such as Guardio, alongside Microsoft Defender.
  • Want a focused replacement antivirus: Emsisoft concentrates on malware and ransomware without many extras.
  • Want an all-in-one suite: G DATA offers several package levels and extra features.
  • Want web filtering and automatic updates: Heimdal focuses on prevention and patching.
  • On a tight budget: Microsoft Defender with Windows and apps kept up to date is a reasonable choice.

Whatever you choose, good habits matter more than any product: keep Windows and your browser updated, use a password manager with unique passwords, turn on two-step verification, and back up important files.

Safe buying checklist

  • Buy only from the company's official website or a verified app store.
  • Use a free trial where one is offered, to check it works well on your PC.
  • Read the renewal and cancellation terms before you subscribe.
  • Uninstall your old antivirus properly before installing a new full antivirus.
  • Ignore antivirus offers that arrive through alarming pop-ups, cold calls or messages claiming your PC is infected.

Frequently asked questions

Is Guardio a replacement for antivirus?

No. It is mainly a browser-focused security layer rather than a full antivirus. Whether it is enough on its own depends on your devices, your browser and what you need protecting.

Can I use Emsisoft or G DATA with Microsoft Defender?

When a product provides its own full real-time protection, Windows usually turns off Defender's real-time protection so the two do not compete. Check the product's installation guide for the details.

Are lesser-known antivirus products less safe?

Not necessarily. A company's size says little about how well it protects you. Look at recent independent test results, the product's documentation, supported devices, how often it updates, and the features you actually need.

Is Microsoft Defender good enough on its own?

For many people it provides solid built-in protection. Keeping things updated, browsing carefully, using strong sign-in methods and keeping backups matter regardless of which security software you use.
